DESCRIPTION:
This class is an introduction to Parkyns’ method of pugilism and the use of the small sword, his treatise published in 1727. As the author himself describes his system, “…a method which teacheth to break all holds, and throw most falls mathematically. Easy to be understood by all Gentlemen, etc, and of great use to such who understand the small-sword in fencing.” We will cover basic attitudes and techniques for pugilism, such as the flying horse, the pinion, the in-clamp, and the hanging tippet. After applying proper form and body movements to these unarmed techniques, the class will apply the same principles to the use of the small sword. This class is an excellent opportunity for people who want to gain a clear understanding of Western martial biomechanics and how these concepts transfer into armed or unarmed actions. Small sword fencers will have the opportunity to release their inner brawler, and the brawler shall assume the visage of a French duelist. |
