DESCRIPTION:
This class will focus on a few key elements of Fiore de Liberi's combat system, and show how understanding the guards, measure and tempo allows the fencer to effectively control his opponent's actions. By analyzing your opponent's position, and attacking in such a way that his feasible responses are reduced to one or two, the attacker can have his counter ready. We will also pay close attention to slight variations in cutting and thrusting technique that allow the fencer to remain covered as he attacks. This class is likely to touch on alternative techniques for entering the fight, such as the obsessio of 1.33, and the stringere of Capo Ferro, to put Fiore's techniques in a historical perspective. Students should be familiar with: the footwork and longsword guards as used by Fiore; the first two plays of the sword in one hand; and the plays of the sword in two hands. Students attending without this prior knowledge will be taught more basic technical exercises. At the end of the class every student will have a working method for analyzing the tactical implications of their technical choices. Students will need: a longsword (steel for preference but a broomstick will do), a mask, and an alert, analytical mind. |
