Master Class:
High-Renaissance Italian Polearms

ROOM: GVT 3950

INSTRUCTOR: Tom Leoni

DESCRIPTION:

In this class we will analyze the fundamental techniques of High-Renaissance Italian polearm combat. These will include the main guards, footwork, parries, thrusts, cuts and a few plays right from the old treatises—all described and taught with their accurate terminology and mechanics.

Material for the class will be strictly from period literature, and each technique or concept will be offered along with the precise reference to the Italian source-treatises. In this manner, the path to further investigation by the attendees will be greatly facilitated.

Attendees can use any polearm available to them (halberd, spiedo, spear, half-pike or even a long staff). 7'- 8' staffs will be available for the class. The length of the weapon should be approximately one to two feet more than the height of the person using it.

Because of the dangerous nature of these weapons, there will be little or no contact between opponents during partner drills, so a fencing mask and sparring gloves will be the only protective equipment required.
