DESCRIPTION:
The great Bolognese master Achille Marozzo left us a valuable and thorough treatise on the use of the massive 2-handed sword (or Spadone), reminiscent of that carried by the Germanic Landsknecht. This sword differs from the longsword in its dimensions, its overall length being around five feet, and in the fact that it has small ricasso-quillons protruding from the middle of the blade’s forte. The beauty of this weapon is that it yields immediate satisfaction even to beginners, as long as the fundamentals are mastered and understood. In this class we will learn to “think” the weapon and the style. We will begin with the main guards and attacks, then learn how to defend against the opponent’s offensive actions and riposte effectively and in style. As with all my classes, the material is strictly from the period sources. Equipment needed is practice 2-handed sword and fencing mask. Although the class will be taught with a replica Spadone, regular longswords or longsword wasters are an acceptable practical alternative for those students who do not own the larger weapon. |
