The Sincture and its Use in Saviolo's Plays

ROOM: GVT Gymnasium

INSTRUCTOR: Cecil Longino

DESCRIPTION:

Saviolo, in his treatise His Practice in Two Books, gives us a technique which he refers to as a sincture (from the Latin cingere: to gird or encompass).

This is the process of altering the line of an assault as it is defended by circularly moving the sword’s point above or below the opponent’s ward. To understand this action and how to effectively employ it while fencing we will need to explore the nature of additional actions such as feints, provocations, and the Spanish acometimiento.

This class will consist of very intense and focused drills designed to encourage proper body mechanics while performing the sincture after a thrust or a cut. The drills will also assist in building one’s acuity for time and measure.

Requirements: mask, jacket, gloves, sword/rapier
