Jack Dempsey's Pugilism
ROOM: GVT Gymnasium
INSTRUCTOR: Ken Pfrenger
DESCRIPTION:
Imagine there was a way to determine who the greatest swordsman in the world was...let say in the year 1520. Not just Germany or Italy but the whole world. Now imagine what a fantastic resource we would have if that swordsman would have written a step by step detailed instruction manual.....ok that's a nice dream without a chance of coming true but this is not so in the world of boxing.
During the early part of the 20th century the greatest boxer in the world was undoubtedly William Harrison Dempsey better known as Jack Dempsey. Although many years have gone by he is still at the top of everyone's list as one of the greatest fighters of all time. His power was legendary as was his aggressive manner of fighting. Some years after his fight career ended, Dempsey wrote a detailed manual which most consider the best boxing book ever written.....
In this class we will be going over the basic material covered in Dempsey's book along with some supplemental material from Edwin Haislet's "Boxing" written a few years before Dempsey wrote his.
Although Dempsey fought in the gloved ring professionally, most of his fights came earlier in his life in mining and logging camps through the USA which traveled along the rails. His style was a mixture of the old
bareknuckle and the modern gloved prize ring. Many have called him the last of the bare knucklers.
We will focus heavily on body position and mechanics, how to get the most power in your punches while maintaining proper alignment to protect your hands. I want to make sure that everyone takes home a few things from this class so we will get fairly in depth with a smaller amount of material.
There are no prerequisites to take this class and no equipment is needed. If you have a pair of focus gloves it would be helpful though.
