Fundamentals of I.33:

Time, Measure, Covers, Binds, and the

Longpoint Plays

Master Class

ROOM: GVT 3950

INSTRUCTOR: Maestro Sean Hayes

DESCRIPTION:

This class will cover key aspects of MS I.33's method of sword and buckler fight.
We will study the custodie (wards) and obsessions (counters) shown in the manuscript and the plays employed with them. We will start with a mechanical drill framework and analyze the plays for concepts of time & measure. Following this we will bring the drills into a tactical framework, using a simple decision-tree exercise to analyze the partner’s offensive, defensive or counter-offensive choice, and immediately decide on a course of action.
Royal Armouries MS I.33 presents a system of personal defense using the sword and buckler that relies strongly on the concept of "covering" against the adversary's offensive position. Key to supporting these covers are the binds employed against the plays from longpoint.
We will examine the nature of the covers, explore their similarities and differences to each other, their relationship to the wards they oppose.
Time will not permit in-class bouting, but the tactical exercises themselves will be quite demanding, so bring a towel to wipe off the sweat and a water bottle for rehydration.
Equipment to bring:
-- Arming Sword (backswords and basket hilts okay, but simple hilts preferred.)
-- Buckler
-- Gloves
-- Head & Face Protection
-- Water Bottle, Sweat Towel, Notebook
