DESCRIPTION:

We spend a great deal of time and energy attempting to study and reconstruct Medieval and Renaissance fighting arts, and many are puzzled by the construction of the treatises, the language and illustrations used, and their teaching methods.

This may lead some to conclude that they are difficult to understand, and this may be true, but it is because we don't spend equivalent time learning about Medieval methods of book construction, memory, teaching and frames of reference. If time is devoted to these studies, the treatises start to become alive, and their teaching becomes clearer.

This paper will attempt to introduce the student of historical martial arts to these concepts, and provide them with the tools and inspiration to further their own study.
