Maestro Class:

Early Small Sword

ROOM: O.C. 232

INSTRUCTOR: M. Jeannette Acosta-Martínez

DESCRIPTION:

In the mid-17th century when the rapier reigned supreme in the theory, art and science of the use of the civilian sword, a new school of fencing emerged in France. The Sindic & Garde de la Compagnie des Maîtres en fait d’armes dictated who could become a master. The power and control they wielded led to a standardization of terminology and methodology, making the French school unique in this era.

The class will examine how the grip effects the manipulation of the weapon. We will cover, the guard position, the lunge, the engagement & disengagement, and the parry positions. We will also cover how the French school views measure and time in the use of this weapon.

The ideal weapon for this class is what would be considered a “transitional rapier” or “early small sword” with a blade length of 34 to 36 inches.

Students should be prepared for a full contact class. Masks, jackets, groin protectors, gloves for both hands, chest protectors for women and plastrons, are strongly recommended. Students are required to bring their own practice weapons; French or Italian foils are also acceptable.
