This lecture will use slides of medieval and renaissance illuminations as well as photos to educate the student on horse movement and horsemanship in medieval mounted combat treatises. This will give significant insight into what is going on “behind the scenes” of the depicted techniques, and heighten the appreciation of the level of training and skill necessary to execute them under the pressures of combat.

A broad range of images will be discussed, including illustrations from Paulus Kal, Fiore dei Liberi, Hans Talhoffer, etc.
