Longsword Concepts: The Use of the Center Line
or
What is the Center Line, and who controls it?

ROOM: Dart Auditorium

INSTRUCTOR: Steaphen Fick

DESCRIPTION:

In this class we will be discussing and practicing the center line of the fight, how it pertains to you as the defender and as the aggressor. We will practice taking the center line from below and from above, while starting from different posta and moving thru other posta.

Center Line drill down

Explain how and why the center line is where most of the fight in this style occurs, and that if you control the center line you can have control of your adversary’s weapon. The center line in question is always in relation to you, and not your adversary. If you move to the side and change your angle then your center line will have changed while theirs has not. This drill is done standing stationary, though.

1. The students will pair up and one will hold his weapon in Posta Breve, and the other will strike the sword on the center line with a Fendente without moving his weapon off line. Have them take the center line from each other, while the one is in Posta Breve.

2. Have one cut slowly with a Fendente and have the other slope right and take the center line with a Fendente.

Center line drill up

3. Have one of the partners start in Posta Breve, and the defender start in Mezza Porta di Ferro. Cut up to Posta Falcone and take the center line.

4. From middle iron door, have the defender cut up into Posta Falcone while doing a slope left to change the angle.
